Hach MSDS Online Request Form
MSDS downloading

The interactive request form allows you to select MSDS pages to download for viewing and printing, providing you with the most current information available.

You will need:

  • The catalog numbers of your Hach products. Catalog numbers may be identified in any of the following ways. NOTE: the catalog numbers should be entered on the
MSDS Download Page without hyphens or spaces.
  1. Hach product labels – all Hach product labels have the catalog number printed on them. This number can usually be found directly under the product title on the label.
  2. Hach's Products for Analysis catalog.
  3. Hach MSDS sheets printed after January 1, 2000. Please note that MSDS sheets printed before this date do NOT have the full Hach catalog number printed on them. Please contact a Customer Service Representative if this is your only source of catalog number information.
  • Netscape Navigator 4.0 or above, or
    Internet Explorer 4.0 or above.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or above. Pages are formatted as Adobe Acrobat 3.0 PDF files. You may download them without using Acrobat Reader, but you will need Reader to view or print the files.

When your selection list is complete, the MSDS server will generate a single PDF file containing the forms you have selected. File download size is limited to about 60 MSDS forms. If you need more than 60 forms, you may create separate files.

What is an MSDS?

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is prepared by a chemical manufacturer, and summarizes available information on the health, safety, fire, and environmental hazards of a chemical product. It also gives advice on the safe use, storage, transportation, and disposal of that product. Other useful information such as physical properties, government regulations affecting the product, and emergency telephone numbers are provided in the MSDS as well. There is a detailed description of how to read an MSDS and a useful glossary of MSDS terms in our Information Central area.

Who Should Have an MSDS Available?

Employers whose employees are working with, or are exposed to, a chemical product should maintain a current copy of an appropriate MSDS for their employees' use. This is mandated in the USA by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under the Hazard Communication Standard, also known as the Right-to-Know rule. MSDSs are required for hazardous chemicals only, and not for objects or non-hazardous chemicals (e.g. beakers or pure water).

MSDS Download Troubleshooting Tips

The Hach MSDS server works best with Netscape 4.0 and Internet Explorer 4.0 and above. The server returns files in the Acrobat Reader 4.0 format. The files require Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader 4.0 or above to view and print files. Generally, you will have fewest problems if you are using the most current versions of these programs.

Known problems:

Files do not open in browser window (general)

This can happen in a number of specific cases (see below). The most direct way to solve the problem is to download the file rather than try to open and view with your browser.

1) Right-click on the 'Download Now' button which appears after your MSDS PDF file has been created.
2) Select the 'save target as...' (Internet Explorer) or 'save link as...' (Netscape) option in the drop-down list.
3) Save the file to your desktop or to a directory, and open the file directly with Acrobat Reader.

If you wish to open the PDF in your browser window and are having a problem, specific known issues are covered below.

Files do not open in an Internet Explorer browser window when using Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.X.

Adobe appears to start, but the browser window is blank. This problem occurs because of a conflict in the way Internet Explorer opens dynamically redirected pages. If you do not wish to upgrade to Acrobat Reader 4.0 (where this problem is easy to correct: see below), here is a workaround:
1. click on the address line of your browser when it is displaying the blank page,
2. delete the http id in the address (http://), and
3. press the "enter" key.

This allows the browser to reload the pdf file as a static file, rather than through a dynamic redirect.

Files do not open in a browser window in Internet Explorer 4.0 or above, when using Adobe Acrobat 4.0 or Acrobat Reader 4.0.

Adobe appears to start, but the browser window is blank. This is the same problem described above, but there is an alternative solution with Acrobat 4.0. You can disable browser display from Acrobat 4.0 and download the file directly to Acrobat or save it to disk to open later.

To disable browser display from Acrobat 4.0 or Reader 4.0:

1) Close Internet Explorer.
2) Start Acrobat Reader 4.0.
3) Choose File > Preferences > General.
4) In the dialog box that appears, clear the checkbox that says "Web Browser Integration" and click the "OK" button. When you download a PDF file with this setting, Internet Explorer will now let you open it in an Acrobat window, or save it to disk.
